Common Questions Asked?

Why Tinnitus Counselling?

Tinnitus Counselling may be a better option than psychotherapy if:

– You have specific issues or short term problems you wish to address

– You wish to learn coping skills to help better manage stress and improve relationships

 – You are coping with life transitions and adjustments

– You are looking for someone who is essentially a “coach” who can guide and support you as you learn to recognise problems and formulate healthy solutions yourself

Tinnitus Counselling is a short term treatment plan that will last between 6 weeks & 6 months. Clients will receive a Qualified BACP Registered Counsellor who works with individuals who require Tinnitus Counselling.

The Counselling focuses on the present problem and situation of living with Tinnitus. The counsellor will work with the individual giving guidance, support, and education to help identify and find their own solutions.

Why Tinnitus Psychotherapy?

A psychotherapist may be a better option than Tinnitus Counselling if:

You have problems that are significantly impacting your life and relationships.

You are coping with past trauma, or if you believe situations in the past may be playing a role in your current issues

Your present issues are chronic or recurring concerns

You have a chronic medical condition that is affecting your emotional well-being

You have a diagnosed mental health condition such as severe depression, mood or  anxiety disorder

You have seen a counsellor, and your issues aren’t improving even though you’ve been actively working on solutions

Psychotherapy addresses the root cause and core issues of current problems so that lasting change and personal growth may occur. Clients will work with an Accredited Psychotherapist who will deliver Tinnitus Psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy is a longer-term treatment that focuses more on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems. Its focus is on your thought processes and how these may be influenced by past events in conjunction with the Tinnitus that caused in part the problems in the present.

What to expect from therapy:

– Focus on chronic or recurrent problems

– Overall patterns, big picture-oriented

– Long term therapy, either continuous or intermittent over a longer period

– Feeling and experience focused

 – May include testing such as personality, intelligence

 – In-depth focus on internal thoughts/feelings (core issues) leading to personal growth

What is Relationship Counselling?

Our counsellors provide a caring, supportive and non-judgmental environment to help you find a way through the effects of tinnitus on your relationships as a couple.

Together we will first help you to identify the issues or problems you are facing in your relationship.

If you decide couple counselling (couples or friends) is the way forward for both of you, you will embark on a series of short-term counselling sessions – anything between six and twelve sessions is normal, but it will depend on the issues you are experiencing.

For some couples, Tinnitus counselling is the start of a long process of discovery while for others, a few sessions of counselling may be all they need to move through a rough patch.

Counselling Methodologies

SoundMind-UK team can offer differing methodologies of Tinnitus Counselling & Psychotherapies from the outset.

Shorter-term solutions would include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, while medium to longer-term solutions includes Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Transactional Analysis & Integrative Methodologies.

Our tinnitus counselling methodologies include elements of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy within the treatment plan selected.

Pros of paying privately for Tinnitus Counselling

Get help almost immediately

Develop a closer more personal relationship with your therapist as there is no no limit on amount of sessions you require.

The NHS has a very ‘ one in one out’ style of working whereas it feels a lot more personal when you go to private sessions.

Going private means clients can choose different treatments.

Choosing to see a therapist privately gives clients greater separation from the rest of their life. Although services are available through GPs and NHS-funded mental health services, many people are worried about perceived mental health difficulties appearing on their medical records.

Tinnitus Counselling Paid by the NHS

SoundMind-UK can apply for NHS funded sessions for you. Sessions are free, this is the biggest advantage of the NHS funding. No application can be guaranteed to be successful.  Between time of application & approval can be 12 weeks or more.

There are some regions within the UK that will not fund specialist services.

Services that ask us for support includes:

  • Solicitors
  • Audiologists
  • Lawyers
  • Courts
  • Employers
  • Educational establishments (colleges, universities etc)

Tinnitus Counselling online through our special HIPPA compliant video systems has many advantages including:

Online counselling gives you the opportunity to speak to a therapist, counsellor or analyst online, without having to meet them face to face.

Online therapy is more convenient than traditional therapy. Instead of driving to a therapist’s office for every session, you can simply log on to our video platform  from the comfort of home.

Using the online systems clients have flexible scheduling, making to fit a session into the day.

Video counselling is also helpful for people who struggle to access in-person treatment for one reason or another. They may have a disability, lack transportation, live too far away from a treatment location, or be unable to leave their house. Online sessions make it possible for these people to receive the mental health treatment they need.

Tinnitus Counselling in-person

SoundMind-UK offer in-person sessions within Central London & Birmingham, Newcastle. Sussex within Canvey, Surrey within Elmbridge, Durham & Hartlepool

New therapy rooms being added throughout 2021 & 2022

Tinnitus is the name for hearing noises that are not caused by an outside source.

The main symptom of tinnitus is hearing a noise, such as ringing or buzzing, that is not caused by an outside source.

Trying to stay relaxed and distracting yourself from the sounds you hear can help with tinnitus. Talking therapies may help if this does not work.

It’s not always clear what causes tinnitus. It’s often linked with hearing loss, other conditions such as Ménière’s disease, anxiety or depression can be present.
